WAITANGI HOLIDAY
Disagreement By F.O.L
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 20. The Government's intention to declare Waitangi Day a public holiday in Northland strikes right across industrial awards and agreements, the council of the Federation of Labour believes. The president (Mr T. E. Skinner) said the council believed no Government should take on itself the right to amend awards and agreements brought down by a judge of the Arbitration Court. “About 16 per cent, of the Maoris live in the Northland area, while 53 per cent live in Auckland province, which means that the majority would be debarred from taking part in the celebrations unless they took time off,” said Mr Skinner. Furthermore, there were no awards that applied only to Northland. It should be remembered that the Treaty of Waitangi affected the whole of New Zealand, not just Northland, and pakehes as well as Maoris. The F.O.L. believed the day should be a national holiday. The federation is expected to make submissions on the question to the Maori Affairs Committee tomorrow.
