LOTTERY FUND GRANTS
Use For Research Questioned "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Aug. 20. The use of Golden Kiwi tottery funds to finance Auckland University’s South Pacific research programme was questioned by the Rev. O. T. Baragwanath, a member of the university council. The programme committee has recommtended an application to the scientific research committee of the Internal Affairs Department for £70.000, spread over three years. The project is one of the biggest single research undertakings ever to be attempted by a New Zealand university. The University Grants Committee has advised that it has no objection to funds being obtained from the Kiwi tottery. Mr Baragwanath said he was concerned that a principle was involved in the use of lottery funds for university purposes. He did not want to delay the programme, but he thought it would be unwise to apply without looking into the matter. Dr. D. Rogers said the council had to be realistic. The application could be the thin end of the wedge for diverting lottery funds to more desirable objectives. The council decided, on a motion of Mr Baragwanath. that the policy committee of the council should report on the proposed application.
