VANDALS ACTIVE

Sports Clubs Suffer

Sports clubs have suffered at the hands of vandals in Christchurch during recent weeks. A police spokesman said yesterday that although the incidence of many types of crime declined during the winter, vandalism occurred regularly throughout the year Yesterday vandals punctured the cistern in the lavatory of the Canterbury University Tennis Club’s pavilion in North Hagley Park. They broke two more windows and. apparently, scrawled more obscenities on the walls. Five times since Christmas, end three times in the last four weeks, vandals and thieves have broken into the pavilion of the Waimairi Beach Surf Life-saving Club. Goods stolen and damage done have meant a loss to the c'.ub of more than £lOO. Last week-end. the two wheels from the club's canoe trailer were stolen. The trailer had been parked outs.de the pavilion because there was no room for it in the equipment shed. The wheels stolen are valued at £ 15. The wheels are painted blue, and the tyres have a good tread on them. Two paddle boards belonging to the club were damaged. Since Christmas vandals have broken windows in the clubhouse, damaged gear, and defaced walls. A meeting of the club’s committee has been called for Sunday to consider ways of preventing vandalism and thefts Any action by the club and supporters to prevent damage by vandals and catch offenders would be taken after consultation with the police, said the club secretary (Mr P Clark).
