WAGE CLAIM FILING
F.O.L To Wait And See (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. The council of the Federation of Labour today adopted a wait-and-see policy of filing another general wage order application, but served notice that it would not tolerate any interference with its right to approach the Arbitration Court. The new president (Mr T. E. Skinner) said the council strongly opposed any move by the Government to take away the right of the federation to make applications for a general wage order. “Any interference with the prerogative of the FOL. to protect the standard of living of its workers will be strenuously opposed by all possible means." He told reporters he had outlined to the council the general economic position of the country and had said the Government's borrowing policy must come to an end. He had explained that general wage orders could only be granted after increases in the cost of living had taken place and the facts proved before the Arbitration Court.
The council had instructed the national executive to file an application for a general wage order when it considered the time appropriate.
