PURGES BY UNIONS
Bill Defines Periods (N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug 20. A recent decision of the Arbitration Court on the collection of arrears of trade union dues resulted in the introduction in Parliament today of an Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill.
The principal act requires the rules of every trade union to provide for the purging of the membership register by striking off the names of members who are in arrear for 12 months in payment of dues.
In practice the period of 12 months has been treated as a maximum, and not n exact period
For many years rules have been recorded containing snorter periods, but this interpretation has been held by the Court to be wrong. The amendment bill substitutes for the 12-months’ period a period to be specified in each union’s rules being not less than three months or more than 12 months.
