£500,000 WATER LOAN
Decision At New Plymouth (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. August 19. The work involved in bringing New Plymouth's water up to grade A standards and ensuring a future supply adequate for the city's needs in the foreseeable future would cost £490.000, the city engineer, Mr N. G. Harris, told the City Council tonight. The council will apply for sanction to raise £500.000 to do the work he recommended. This includes a filter plant to cost £250,000 and two 2,000.000-gallon reservoirs. There has been much criticism of the water by New Plymouth residents in the last 12 months because of its cloudiness and a taste of chlorine. The improvements will be at Lake Mangamahoe, five miles from the city, the present source of supply.
