Grain And Seeds Slight Easing In Price Of Chippewa Potatoes

During the last fortnight there has been a steady movement of South Island potatoes to the North Island. The price to the South Island grower has remained firm; with a slight easing of about £1 a ton for Chippewas. It is eight weeks since there was any noticeable increase in the price to growers and merchants do not see any likelihood of an early rise. The Season tar South Island po/atoes is well advanced, and the stability of the market will depend on how long it will be before the early North Island crop comes on to the market. According to merchants, this could be expected towards the end of September or early in October.

Prices quoted for last week were £22 a ton tar Suttons, £2l far Chippewas, £2O tor Ham Hardy and Sebago, and £l9 for other white varieties. Overseas interest in the small seeds market has remained dull, as is to be expected at this time ot the year. Merchants report there is a little business being transacted at current market levels, but what is being done is for later delivery. According to information, merchants have received from overseas, good white clover and ryegrass crops are expected from the United States and Danish harvests. American white clover is being sold to Europe, and a report from an English merchant says the Danish white clover price has dropped to compete with American selling to Germany. The British harvest is under way and some merchants report the English grass seed

harvest is well advanced. At present Britain is showing very little interest in the New Zealand market, which is normal for this time of the year.
