Maximum Fine Imposed (NJE. Pres* Association > ’ WELLINGTON, Au«. 16. Noel Erie Roeeman, a publisher, was convicted on two charges relating to the importation of a motor car, by Mr J. A. Wicks, SM, in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington today. Roseman first appeared on June 14. pleading not guilty to charges of importing prohibited goods, smuggling a car, and making a misleading declaration with intent to defraud. Today, Mr J. D. Murray, for the Crown, withdrew the charges, of making a misleading declaration. On the remaining two charges Roseman was fined the maximum £lOO on each charge, plus Court costs £1 10s and solicitor’s fees £l5 15s. The car will be forfeited. “At the hearing of the evidence I was prepared to believe Roseman was attempting to arrange his affairs to comply with the law,” said the Magistrate. “On reading the notes of evidence more closely. I found he deliberately conceived a scheme to defraud the Customs Department. “Because I felt these offences were deliberate, an ingenious scheme which did not come off. I have no hesitation in fining him the maximum.”
The Magistrate said that if the charges had been heard in the Supreme Court the penalty would probably have been much higher.
