Superior close marking by the centre court players enabled Australia to beat New Zealand. 37-36 in the vital match between the unbeaten teams in the world basketball tournament at Eastbourne. Sussex, yesterday New Zealand led by five goals at one stage in the first quarter, and finished the session 11-8 ahead. The second quarter produced tight, enterprising play as Australia fought back, but New Zealand retained its three goals advantage 17-14. A rash pass in the New Zealand goal area led to Australia scoring, and New Zealand fell behind for the first time as the Australians crept ahead to 20-19 at half-time. The third quarter went goal for goal to 25-25, Australia ending with the lead. 30-27, although having fewer attempts at goal. In the last quarter New Zealand worked hard to even the score at 34-34 after nine minutes’ play Australia then scored three times in succession and the game ended as New Zealand had caught up two with the ball in its goal area. Australia had more shots at goal but its shooting average was poorer in the final analysis. The New Zealand team com?rised: C McMaster. J. Blair. . Martin. P. Edmonds. E. Simpson, L. Muir and M.
