ALCOHOLISM IN BRITAIN
Increase To Be Studied (N.Z.P .A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, August 2. The Home Secretary, Mr Henry Brooke, yesterday announced an inquiry into Britain’s increase in drunkenness. Convictions for drunkenness in England and Wales last numbered 83,992 an increase of 12.5 per cent over 1961. continuing an upward trend over the last 11 years.
There was an 8 per cent, fall in the number of convicted persons under 18. Mr Brooke said the inquiry would be made by the social survey division of the Government's Central Office of Information. Scotland’s 33 Alcoholics Anonymous groups yesterday began pooling their views to help the Scottish Health Deoartment treat alcoholism. Scotland has about 40.000 alcoholics. About 300 of them die each year through drink. Organ Talks (N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) HOBART, August 2 Technicians have been called in to gag a “talking" organ at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, in the Hobart suburb of Bellerive.
Recently the congregation was startled when voices—apparently picked up from radio broadcasts —came from th'- electronic organ. Technicians said nsd heard of amplifiers being turned into receivers ana this was probably the cause.
