Swimming RECORDS FALL
200 m. Freestyle In Imin 58.8 sec (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LOS ANGELES, July 28. The Australian swimming star, M. Rose, described the 17-year-old Californian, D. Schollander, as “the best there is” after watching the American smash the official world record for the 200 metres freestyle in Los Angeles yesterday. Schollander was timed at Imin 58.8 sec. The official world record is 2min o.ssec but R. Windle, of Australia, has a time of 2min o.3sec awaiting recognition. Schollander was timed at 57.65ec for the first 100 metres yesterday. Miss Donna De Varona, aged 16, shattered the world 100 metres backstroke record today with a time of Imin 8.9 s ec.
She bettered the existing world mark of Imin 9sec set in 1960 by Miss Lynn Burke, of New York.
