Courtly Gesture 9 (N ZPA.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. July 23 A Portu— ’sse student. Alfredo Magaihaes. flung his cape down for the Duke of Edinburgh to walk over yesterday. A companion, also from Portugal, told the Duke: “You must walk on it” The Duke replied, amid laughter: “In this country, that’s only for ladies.” but with a long stride over the cloak he went down the steps to his car. Nuno Santos, a 19-year-old chemistry student from Lisbon, explained that in Portugal it was customary for students to place their c!oa.'-s in front of important visitors to the university. "It was a courtly gestuia.** he said. The Duke was on his wav from the International Youth Science Conference.
