Motor-Cycle Parking
Sir,—The absence of any provision flor parking space for motor-cycles and scooters about the city is most noticeable. As elsewhere, the removal of a parking meter space near various intersections and an area marked out for right-angle parking for approximately 10 motorcycles would be quite adequate. The present law
stating they should be parked parallel to the kerb is impractical, as road slope affects the stand balance. Any loss of meter revenue would be offset by the ceasing of the practice of parking motor-cycles in bicycle stands, over fire plugs, and poaching meter space, all of which cause annoyance to other road users. I feel that some action is overdue and that the popular and everincreasing motor-cycle and scooter should get some consideration.—Yours, etc., R. M. FITZGERALD. July 17, 1963.
[The Traffic Suiperinterudent of tihe Christohuirch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) said: “When the Christahurch by-law was resolved governing the use of parking meters, no provision was made for the parking orf power-cycles because numerically they posed no problem. Such was not the case, however, with motor-cycles. The latter enjoy the same ngh’s to use parking meters as do motor cars, except that up to six motor-cycles may use the same metered space provided than the meter fee tor the space is paid. During the last few years the power-cycle papulation has increased rapidly and consideratoon is at present being given to this matter which may require an amendment to the by-law to the difficulties mentioned by the correspondent.”]
