Contribution Of Club Praised

The value of the club, in football and beyond it, in terms of character-building, the teaching of discipline, and the making of good citizens could not be measured, said the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. H. P. Smith) in proposing a toast to the Christchurch Football Cdub at a dinner which was part of the club’s centennial celebrations.

“Yours is a glorious heritage," Cr. Smith said. “It is your responsibility, and that you will discharge it with credit to the club of Which you are so proud no-one will doubt."

The president of the club (Mr A. I. Cottrell) said that lOC years was a long time in the history of a young country, and through that period the club had provided healthy amateur sport for its members. It had set high standards, and fought always to uphold them, “The club has never suf-, fered from neglect, and it never will, as long as it keeps its standards, never becomes smug or self-satis-fied, and has at the helm that type of men who have guided it through its history,” said Mr Cottrell.

The president of the New Zealand Rugby Union (Mr H. A. McPhee) replying to a toast to the union, extended the union’s best wishes to the club, and congratulated the club “on its 100 years of existence in Rugby football" and in being the first to reach 100 in New Zealand history. Mr R. W. Thomas, replying to a toast to sister and kindred clubs, congratulated Christchurch on its style of play. “As you enter your second 100 years make sure the banner you carry, and the style of play which pleases the public and the players, are kept, and we will all deem it a privilege to play against you.’’

Nelson Nominates Four For S.I.

(N2. Press Association) NELSON, July 23. The Nelson Rugby Union has made four nominations for the South Island team for the annual match against the North Island on Augusi 10 at Christchurch. They are three backs—M. J. Delany, O. J. Nicholas, and B. E. McPhail—and a forward, E. N. Fitzsimmons.
