HEMLINES DOWN
New Paris Fashions (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) PARIS, July 22. Jacques Heim dropped the hemline three inches today in the first "revolution’’ of the Paris autumn and winter fashion collections. Heim’s new silhouettes banish the knees, emphasising the hips and natural waistline. Inspiration for this collection is derived from the central European peasant and the nineteenth century shepherdess. The peasant wears low-heeled boots and a Russian babushka, or kerchief, made in matching fur or suede. Fur banding plays up the mid-calf hemline. The day-time silhouette has entirely new proportions, due to the hem length and ultrashort suit jackets or boleros. The shepherdess wears coats with tiny waistlines or full swirling skirts which Paris has not seen for years. Heim revives deep box pleats springing from a belted waistline. Neckline treatments are mostly co-related to hemlines with bias collars matching the flared banding of dress hems. Long sleeves are the new decree.
Heim’s cocktail and dinner dresses are even longer—l 3 inches from the floor. The formal suit made entirely of precious fur is almost as popular as the furbordered ensembles. Wild mink is working in horizontal bands for a flared skirt with matching jacket.
