RUGBY Canterbury Nominates 11 For South Island Team

Eleven players, including seven All Blacks, have been nominated for the South Island team by the Canterbury selectors (Messrs R. H. Duff and M. J. Dixon).

The nominations were approved at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening.

The South Island team will be chosen on August 3.

As in previous years, the selectors have nominated both J. N. Creighton and D. Young for the position of hooker. R. C. Moreton and D. A. Arnold have both been named as second five-eighths, and Arnold also as a centre. The nominations are:— Backs —W. F. McCormick (ft»ll-back), W. Birtwistle (wing), D. A. Arnold (centre or second five-eighths), R. C. Moreton (second five-eighths), B. A. Watt (first fiveeighths), M. F. Whitta (halfback).

Forwards—D. J. Graham (flanker), A. J. Stewart (lock). J. M. Le Lievre (prop.), J. N. Creighton and D. Young (hooker). Seven-a-Side Only seven of the 12 senior clubs have entered teams in the senior seven-a-side competition which will be held after the end of.the senior competition. The entries, most of them from the D.CX.. Shield section, were -—Mer iva le (1), Albion (2), Belfast (2),., Suburbs (1), Sydenham (2), Shirley (2), Linwood (2). The missing entries must be an oversight. Most clubs have said they are in favour of a seven-a-side, said Mr J. Storey. It was decided to write to the clubs concerned and ask them to enter teams.

One of the grounds at Bromley Park was in a poor condition for a match between Albion and Linwood Bst 71b teams, said a letter from the Albion club.

"A part of the ground was under water and there was a

foul stench coming from the deepest water. One line-umpire had to wear gumboots so ne could move up and down the side-line,” the club wrote. Mr J. Storey, chairman of the competitions committee, said the ground was being spelled this week. It would not have been used last week if the committee knew of its condition.

Appointments Mr R. O. McDowell has been appointed referee of the match between Otago and New Zealand Maoris at Dunedin on Saturday. Mr W. D. Johnstone was appointed manager of the Canterbury team to play Southland and Otago. Grade managers for the representative season are:—Canterbury B (Mr L. F Adams». sensor reserve (D. B.
