PENSION FOR WIDOWS
Discussion By Conference (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 22. A remit asking the Government to allow widows to earn more without affecting their benefit after their children were self-supporting was passed by a committee of the National Party conference today. At present, widows may earn £5 a week while their children are dependent, but only £3 a week after their children are self-supporting.
A letter from the Minister of War Pensions (Mr Kinsella) was read to the committee, in which it was stated that it would be impossible to raise this allowance without raising other war widows’ and old-age beneficiaries' pensions.
But they could have their benefit suspended while they were working and have it returned when they stopped working, the letter said. Mrs J. G. Reeves (Raglan): I think widows’ benefits should never be reduced: £5 is Little enough to bring children up on. Mr P. Mason (Onehunga): They axe a highly-penalised section of the community, and we are supposed to stand for all sections. They are not provided for and not looked after.
