GIFT OF £5000
University Fund (N.Z Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 23. Mr and Mrs C. V. Smith, of Dunedin, will make a gift to the University of Otago of £5OOO. with one year's income in advance to establish a special fund.
Mr Smith gave notice of their intention in a letter received today by the proChancellor, Mr T. K. S. Sidey. at a meeting of the council. Mr Smith explained that during his years as chairman of the council’s finance committee he had often felt it would be useful to have a fund with the minimum conditions attached that could deal with matters affecting members of the academic staff and meet situations which proved difficult to solve from ordinary expenditure. Mr Sidey expressed the deep appreciation of the university to Mr and Mrs Smith This special gift from one who had already given so much of his time and energy to university affairs over many years was most generous. he said.
