GLUE FOR TILES
Ministry Seeks
Alternative
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. July 23.
The Ministry of Works has been instructed to take immediate action to find a substitute adhesive for applying tiles to the Christchurch-
Lyttelton road tunnel. The secretary of the Canterbury Carpenters’, Plasterers’, and Bricklayers’ Union <Mr F. L. Langley) saw the Minister of Works (Mr Goosman) today with ttie secretary of the Federation of Labour (Mr K, McL. Baxter) and the president of the Workers’ Union (Mr F. Fenton).
They outlined the situation in which tunnel workers have suffered dermatitis caused by the epoxy-resin being used to fix the tiles in the tunnel. Tilers and tilers’ labourers working at the tunnel decided last week not to use the adhesive after 5 p.m. tomorrow.
After a 10-minute meeting with Mr Goosman, Mr Langley said tonight that he would advise the men of the new position and of the action promised by Mr Goosman to have their complaint rectified as soon as possible. It is understood an alternative adhesive will be readily obtainable for the continuation of the work in the tunnel.
