Open Tournament At Harewood
A CKNOWLEDGED as one of the best winter golf courses in the country, the Harewood Young People’s links should prove an ideal venue for a 36-hole open tournament next Sunday. It will be the first open tournament to be held at the course since the war. Interest in the event will be heightened by the presence of five men who have represented Canterbury in Freyberg Rose Bowl contests: R. C. Murray, K. D. Foxton and E. H. M. Richards (all of Russley), R. E. Clements (Templeton) and C. W. Caidwell (Christchurch). Competition will be in three sections—senior, intermediate and junior—and good entries are likely, as there are few open tour-
nament* before August-Sep-tember. A special trophy is to be offered for the setting of a new course record—the present mark, a two-under-par 71, was set by D. R. Hope in the annual Golf Foundation tournament for boys in May. To encourage juniors, trophies will also be offered for the best 36-hole score by a player under 21 and by a player under 17. The course was greatly improved by the late Mr A. R. Blank and the recent rains are unlikely to make a great impression on the playing surface. The greens are in first-class order; tournament officials claim that there are none better in Christchurch.
