Something Cooking -For Murphy
rpHE New Australian proA fessional boxer, Pasquale Curcio, with 51 bouts behind him. should give the Christchurch light-weight, Dion Murphy, the toughest fight of his career when they meet at Canterbury Court on Thursday evening.
Murphy has had six fight* as a professional, winning five of them by the short route. Hi* l**t two bouts in Christchurch against Australians Bobby Daldo and Johnny Robert*, have not extended him —they could be regarded a* warmup fight* for hl* meeting with Curcio.
Curcio, aged 22, 1* • feather-weight He was born In Calabria, south-west Italy and began his professional boxing career in Melbourne in 1957. He has rince won 30 bouts, eight of than inside the distance. He has been counted out four times.
It does not appear, from hit record, that he has • killer punch, so the bout
with Murphy could go the full 10 rounds Curcio was booked to fight Murphy earlier this season but was counted out in a bout in Melbourne and was not able to fight for a month because of the medical rule in Australian boxing.
He is rated fourth on the Australian feather-weight list and normally fights about Bst 131 b or 9st
Because of recent upsets to the Tasman air service schedule. Curcio will not be arriving in Christchurch until this evening. The Canterbury Boxing Association. executives, who have suffered some bad luck with illnesses, requiring last-minute substitutes, will be keeping their fingers crossed.
Murphy is very fit and looking forward to meeting Curcio, on paper the toughest opponent he has met in bis professional career. Curcio is a chef and may have something cooking for Murphy or be may find he la meeting a “hot potato.”
