Gold Coast Antipathy

The Queensland Premier. Mr G. F. R. Nicklin, this week rejected the idea of a casino on the Gold Coast.
The propoal came from the Better Business Bureau of the Surfers' Paradise Chamber of Commerce. The bureau said a casino could raise funds for tourist promotion. Mr Nicklin said: “We don’t want anything like gambling casinos or one-armed bandits in Queensland.” He said any approach to the Government for a permit would not be considered.
The Mayor of the Gold Coast, Aiderman E. Harley, said he would campaign throughout the length and breadth of the Coast against the introduction of “such an iniquitous gambling establishment as a casino.”
