SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Use Of Golden Kiwi Profits
(NJI. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 22. The Minuter of Internal Affairs (Sir Leon Gotz) explained to a committee of the Nattered Party conference today that it was intended to assist scientific research substantially with Golden Kiwi lottery profits.' He was addressing a committee that had before it 'a remit that increasing percentages of the lottery profits be used for research and old people's homes and that as a beginning, after provision is made for a reasonable amount for charity, a £2 million endowment for research be accumulated.
Speakers for the remit said that the lottery could do for New Zealand what the great research foundations did in other countries. Sir Leon Gotz said existing legislation included “projects of benefit to the community” among objects for which the lottery was conducted, and research was regarded as a project of benefit to the community. It was not necessary to accumulate a capital sum because a steady income was equivalent to tbe interest on a large capital amount. Research organisations were preparing projects which lottery profits could support. This took time because it had to be decided that they would not duplicate work in other countries and would be worth while. Once approved, they would not suffer from lack of mopey. Old people's homes were not within the scope of the lottery profits, said Sir Leon Gotz. They were provided for in ether ways, but lottery money was granted to old people’s clubs.
