Obscene Publications
Sir.—Decorum precludes a properly frank discussion of what constitutes this evil As a reviewer of some experience I should like to put in plain English what I regard as two examples of harmful and pernicious reading for young people who have access to it: (1) The detailed anatomical description of what the papers delicately call "intercourse.” This is not as uncommon as it might be, and while it bores or disgusts (or possibly excites) adults, it must definitely demoralise a teen-ager. (2) The man-of-the-world attitude that unnatural practices are Just a human peccadillo, to be no more condemned than more natural lapses. Both these factors undermine the fundamental principles of morality and I would suggest that the publishers of such books be black-listed from libraries over a period as a measure of public disapproval. Censors, if they wished, could get a good deal of help from reviewers and those who employ them. —Yours, etc., REVIEWER. July 8, 1963.
