EXPLOSION IN LAUNCH
Men Jump Into Water (N 2 Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 7. Two men leaped into the watei as their 26ft launch burst into flames near Rangitoto Island tonight. They swam to a dinghy which had been towed behind. The men -had been fishing •nd were preparing for the trip home when an explosion occurred. The men, Messrs Gordon Cousins, of Dublin street. Ponsonby, and D. W. Billings, of King road, Panmure, sat in their dinghy and watched the launch burn to the waterline and sink. “I was just going to pul) up the anchor and Gordon was standing in the cockpit with the motor ticking over,” said Mr Billings tonight. "It just seemed to explode. "The hatch cover went straight up; I looked around •nd saw the fire behind me •nd jumped into the water.” The men, after jumping into the water and swimming to the dinghy, were picked up by another launch.
