(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

BRISBANE, July 8. The New Zealand jockey, K. Nuttall, was disqualified for 12 months today following an inquiry by the Queensland Turf Club stewards into the running of the New Zealand galloper. Rochdale, in the Carnival Handicap at Doomben on Saturday. Rochdale is raced in partnership by Messrs L. Hodgson and W. Sanders. Mr Sanders Is at present in New Zealand, but Mr Hodgson attended the inquiry. Nuttall said he would appeal against the decision. Nuttall admitted to the inquiry that he had ridden a bad race, but said he had no motive in pulling the horse up. He asked that Rochdale’s off-fore-leg be examined by a veterinary surgeon. Nuttall handed the chairman of stewards. Mr N. Frawley, a document which the chairman said was an offer to Nuttall to become a stable jockey in Kuala Lumpur. The inquiry heard statements

from four stewards on the running of the race. The stewards accepted the explanation of the part-owner, Mr Hodgson, and told the trainer, W. Clifton, there was not sufficient evidence to lay a charge against him. Mr Frawley (to Nuttall): You were back last and restraining your mount.

Nuttall: He jumped on the wrong leg and was off balance all the way. He wouldn’t go. Mr Frawley: Weren’t you looking for somewhere to smother up in the field?—No sir I had nothing under me that could do anything. Nuttall admitted to Mr Frawley that he did not ride out his mount with the whip. Nuttall served one previous term of disqualification in Australia over the running of the Victorian horse High Classic, in the Cooee Handicap at Moonee Valley in July. 1958. The stewards disqualified Nuttall and the owner and trainer of the horse for two years, but the term was reduced to one year on appeal. On an earlier Australian visit In 1952 Nuttall won the Metropolitan Handicap on the New Zealand champion Dalray, but was replaced by the Victorian jockey, W. Williamson, in the horse’s Melbourne Cup victory.
