CYCLING Jeffery Scores Second Win From Scratch
The Hornby Cash Cycling Club’s 50-mile race for the J. C. Wilson Cup on Saturday was a triumph for K. Jeffery, who. for the second week in succession, came through the Heid from the scratch mark to take first place and fastest time. A fellow scratch man, F. Hooper, repeated his performance of last week in coming second.
The course was from Islington along the Main South road to Dunsandel. then across to Leeston and return to Islington through Lincoln. W. Campion, when holding the lead between Dunsandel and Leeston, took the wrong road for a short distance; when he got back on the right path he was still in the lead, but had dropped a lot of ground. He was soon picked up by J. Crofts and I. Arnst, but they in turn met misfortune on the Selwyn bridge—•Arnst" punctured and Crofts dropped his mudguard. The scratch riders, Jeffery. Hooper and E. McCann, were giving away four minutes to break. McCann fell back after one mile, but the other two produced great speed to gather in the break men near Dunsandel. The two groups gathered in the five-minute markers after half the journey had been covered. Just before Prebbleton, D. Hewer <Bmin) made a break away from the leading bunch. But the back men gradually gathered him in during the last five miles. In a very close finish Jeffery held on to take the decision from Hooper, vrith a veteran of the field, A. Howison, in third place. M. Burns, the winner of the race last year when it was first run. finished fourth.
Jeffery recorded a time of 2hr Imin 14.4 sec for the 50 miles, which was exceptionally good considering the conditions. Results were:—K. Jeffery (scr), 2:1:14.4, 1; F. Hooper (scr), 2:1:14.6. 2: A. The Avon club conducted a 40 mile out-and-home race at Yaldhurst in which the other two local amateur clubs took part. The event was a scratch race divided into two sections R. Fowler (Avon), who has been showing a return to his old form, won the A grade event. and J. Clemence (Papanui) was the winner of the B grade race. One or two riders made halfhearted attempts to make a break but they were soon back with the main bunch. Nearing the finish of the A grade race B. ' Hack (Papanui) appeared to have the race in hand but D. Gutry (Christchurch) closed in rapidly on him and then Fowler flew past to take the decision from Gutry by the narrowest of margins. In the B grade race riders pulled out from the back of the field until only five competitors were left to fight out the final sprint. This developed into a great duel between Clemence and P. Wildermoth (Avon) and it was only in the final yard that Clemence was able to get his wheel ahead and take the race. Results were:— A Grade—R. Fowler (Avon). 1:41:37. 1: D Gutry (Christchurch ). 1:41:37.2. 2; B. Hack
