SUGAR BEET COMPANY
Trial Yields Encouraging (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 8. Share capital in the Taranaki Sugar Company, Ltd., has been increased from £550 to £12,000 and the company is being changed from a private to a public company. Half the 12.000 shares will be held in reserve. Extensive trials have been carried out by the company in growing sugar beet on about 20 acres of land in various parts of South Taranaki. The managing-director of the company, Mr W. G. Bassett, said tonight that the results of the trials were proving most encouraging.
"It looks as if the sugar content will be at least 16 per cent.,” he said.
Yields on the trial plots had been from 30 to 40 tons an acre, and it looked as if a yield of at least 30 tons an acre could be expected when the sugar beet was grown on a commercial basis. This was at least twice the average yield in Continental countries. said Mr Bassett. “As far as the Government is concerned, when it is considering the establishment of a sugar beet industry, we hope the fullest consideration will be given to every aspect of both growing and production,” he said.
