DIRTIEST TOWN’
Lyttelton Cited
Lyttelton was the dirtiest and untidiest town he had ever seen, said Cr. W. Dodds at a meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening. After the cries of "no,” “never” and “we don’t agree” from other councillors had subsided, Cr. Dodds continued: ”1 have been concerned for some time about the Utter lying round the streets of this town.”
Children were among the worst offenders, said Cr. Dodds. He suggested that an anti-litter campaign should be organised by the council. Cr. N. D. Walker said the position in Lyttelton was no worse than anywhere else. Some of the litter baskets that had been erected round .he streets some years ago were now missing, said Cr. G. E. Boyd. If new ones were installed, the public would have to be educated to use them, She said. The deputy-Mayor (Cr. R. H Duff> said he did not agree with Cr. Dodds's remarks about Lyttelton being the dirtiest town, but did support his anti-litter campaign suggestion. The matter was referred to the council’s health and sanitation committee for a report.
