Staying For Five Years
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 8 The manager for the Manepouri power project. New Zealand-born Mr Neville Long, arrived in New Zealand today. He is making has fifth trip here as a representative of the Bechtel Corporation. consulting engineers. of San Francisco, which is in charge of the £3l million project. This time he will stay for five years—until the station is running. “I think 1968 is a realistic date to have power on the line,” Mr Long said. “Thai’s the date we’ve given the Government and we can keep to it.” Mr Long called the Manapouri scheme a large project and a very interesting one. He had heard a good deal of mention of Lt overseas The scheme did pose considerable technical problems, he said. The mountain range and general isolation of the area would be the biggest problems to the construction men.
Mr Long will take charge of designing and managing construction at Manapouri
Propeller Freed.—The winch wire which fouled the port propeller of the collier Kaitawa about 370 miles from Auckland last Wednesday caused no damage. A diver yesterday used a hacksaw blade to cut the winch wire away.—(P.A.)
