Dr. Arturo Illia, a political moderate, took an early lead in Argentina’s Presidential elections last night and inconclusive returns also showed an apparent setback for followers of the former dictator, Juan D. Peron, United Press International reported. He represents the People’s Radicals.

The Peronists—about onethird of the electorate—were ordered to boycott the election by casting blank ballots But returns showed only about 19 per cent, of the ballots were blank, compared with the 25 per cent, boycott by Peronists in 1960. With nearly 13,000 of the nations 46.169 precincts reporting, unofficial returns gave Illia, a 63-year-old country doctor 760,585 votes.

General Pedro Aramburo, former provisional had 530,841, and the third major candidate of the eight contestants. Dr. Oscar Alende (Intransigent Radicals* 444.535.

About 10 million persons voted in polling places guarded by troops fearing Peron ist violence, but there were no incidents. The 21,139 elective offices at stake include the Presidential electors. The elections were aimed at restoring constitutional government to Argentina 15 months after President Arturo Frondizi’s overthrow by the armed forces.
