TROOPS TO LEAVE
I . Congo Force
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 7. Virtually all United Nations forces will be withdrawn from the Congo by the end of the year. 'riie decision by the Secre-tary-General, U Thant, to speed up the withdrawal was based partly on the continuing financial crisis in the United Nations, says the “New York Times.”
Previously it had been understood that the size of the force would be reduced, but some units would be kept on during the early part of 1964 to enable the Congolese Government to reorganise and train its army. Some sources said that if there was a serious threat of fighting among the Congo tribes, U Thant might retain a small contingent of not more than 1000 men after December 31. The United Nations Congo Force numbered more than 19,000 men at its peak strength, but now has been reduced to 7982 men.
