Trials By N.Z. Firms
Trial quantities of benton ite from Hughey Brother’s mine in the Harper Hills, near Hororata, had been distributed to prospective users in various parts of New Zealand, and as far as was known had met with general approval, Mr D. J. Hughey, Hororata manager of Hughey Brothers, Ltd., said yesterday.
Negotiations were now going bn for production and marketing on a commercial scale. Mr Hughey said. The Department of Industries and Commerce was making a survey of possible overseas markets, and the Dominion Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research was working cm means of broadening the market potential of the bentonite by converting it to the swelling type. An all-weather road has been completed to the mine from the Downs road behind Hororata.
