NEW BRIGHTON'S BID FAILS

Beaten, 3-2, By Shamrock

New Brighton’s bid to finish as runner-up to Nomads in its first season in the premier Soccer divjsion failed in the early game at English Park on Saturday. After changing round at O-ifl. New Brighton conceded three goals in five minutes to Shamrock, and. notwithstanding a late rally, was beaten.

By its victory. Shamrock moved into second place, and can now be overhauled only by Western, which has still to play its final game in the Hurley Shield competition. Shamrock and New Brighton are the only teams to have completed their programmes. A scrappy game at English Park woke up after the interval. with the scoring of five goals in quick succession. J. Rea set Shamrock on the road to victory with two fine goals, and J. Price added a. third after a neat movement begun by P Barrett.

New Brighton made several positional changes in an attempt io put some life into its attack, and J. Smit, switched to inside-ltorward, paved the way for W. Down to score. R Home netted New Brighton's second goal, but Shamrock held on to its one-goal lead during ■ hectic last 10 minutes.
