STOLE 119 MATTRESSES
Upholsterer For Sentence
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 28. William Henry Constantine, aged 42, an upholsterer, pleaded guilty before Mr L. G. HSinclair, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Auckland today to stealing 119 innerspring mattresses worth £1123 while a servant of the New Zealand Theatre Chair Company. Sergeant J. D. O’Connor said Constantine had joined the company in 1961 and, after some time, suggested that the firm should manufacture inner-spring mattresses. His suggestion was carried out and he was placed in charge of production. Early this year he left the company. Inquiries showed that he had been selling mattresses to retailers, auction houses and private homes, saying that he was the manager and authorised to make the sales. Constantine went to Australia, and was extradited on June 20. Sergeant O’Connor said the value of the mattresses so far unrecovered amounted to £773. The Magistrate convicted Constantine and remanded him until July 5 for sentence.
