SUGAR INDUSTRY IN N.Z.

Nationalisation Urged

A resolution asking the Government to nationalise the sugar industry in New Zealand was passed at a public meeting held in the Trades Hall last evening, according to a supplied report. About 35 persons attended the meeting, which was organised by the Communist Parly. The following resolution was passed: “That this meeting of Christchurch citizens protests to the Government over the high cost of sugar supplied by the Colonial Sugar Refinery and the New Zealand Sugar Company, in view of the excessive monopoly profits made by them every year, and urges the Government to set up a nationalised sugar industry find also a nationalised sugar beet industry.” There were three speakers, Messrs J. G. Locke and J. A. Sturt, members of the Communist Party, and Mrs J Ryan, a member of the Housewives’ Union.
