Lucky Son’s Promise For Winter Cup

Lucky Son goes from strength to strength and shapes like a promising prospect for the Winter Gup at Riccarton next month.

He started his three-year-old racing this season with a win in a maiden race at Gore.

He has now won six races for the term, the last four in a row, and the latest of them at Washdyke on Saturday. He was top-weight and a dominating favourite for the Kingsdown Intermediate Handicap and won unchallenged by a length and a half. Mir J. B. Brown’s Isaac of York gelding could develop better form than his halfbrother, Believe Me, which was in the top class when ait his best as a winter performer.

Lucky Son’s six wins this season have been worth

£ll6O, the most valuable one being Saturday’s £250. Lucky Son accelerated quickly from one of the inaide positions and held a short lead after about half a furlong. But he quickly had a trailing run, first behind Drake’s Treasure and then when Gladaub went ahead near the three furlongs.

Gladaub dashed away to a lead of two or three lengths near the home turn, but was beaten in a few strides after straightening, and Lucky Son came to the front again. Brown Brodade finished stoutly, but never managed to put Lucky Son to the test.

Lostalon picked up several Places from the home turn for third a neck behind Brown Brocade and two and a half lengths clear of Shalom.

Mon Roi and Bronze Knight, both slow beginners, were fast finishers to fill the next two positions.

Well-Earned Win Racing also started with, a favourite’s victory. Idol Prince improved on some solid placed runs with an easy win in the Winchester Malden Stakes. Mr and Mrs R. D. Vance's Llanstephan colt ran in the front bunch from the start and drew clear outside the furlong. The best of his rivals, but a length and a half back, was Mossburn, a three-year-old sister of the good winner, Teaks. Moesbum. which was making a fresh start, had a trailing run to the straight She finished a length in advance of the. former Wingatui galloper.

Cumberland, which wa« having his first start for Mr N. A. Syme. Cumberland shaded Bona Fide, which had her chance.

Chaud Froid, another form runner, easily won the Caroline Malden Stakes for Messrs R. J. and T. J. Kennedy, who train him at Waimate. After running with Maria Mia in the lead, Chaud Froid galloped clear in the straight and won by two lengths from the eighth favourite. Pete.r James. Side Saddle was a neck back, and unchallenged tor third. Solid Finish

Canadian* had a well-earned second win for the season in the Beaconsfield Improvers’ Handicap. She was only nosed out by Hiaway at Ashburton a week earlier, and this time she finished generously for a length victory over the favourite, Highland Fair. Canadian* won the Cashmere Plate at Riccarton for Mr V. D. Clutterbuck at her first start this season. She was one of three winners on the programme sired by Isaac of York. A. H Eastwood had Canadian* well planed behind the front bunch, and the little bay finished generously when called on to improve. Highland Fair had his chance, but Royal Pic had to come wide and from far back- for hi* third, a place he filled at long odd*. Blue Harken, another long shot, shaped like an improver in finishing fourth. He finished strongly but no better than Clouds, which was fifth a neck behind. Hiaway was sixth after being fairly wide all the way
