Irish Derby To Ragusa (N.Z.PA.-Reuter— Copyright) THE CURRAGH. June 29 The Irish colt Rarusa, ridden by the Australian jockey, G. Bougoure, today won the Irish Derby—Europe's richest horse race. A. W. BreaMey on the English entry, Tiber, was third. Before the start there was a racing sensation when the French colt Relko, odds-on favourite, was withdrawn after being found to be lame. Ragusa finished third to Relko at Epsom last month. Ragusa, a bay colt by Ribot, the famed Italian sire, took the lead at the two furlongs from Home Mark and ran on strongly to win by two lengths and a half at odds of 100/7.
Another Irish horse, Vic Mo Cliroi, was second. The £50,000 prise went to Raguoa’s owner, Mr J. Mullion. Had Relko run he seemed certain to complete a unique classic treble within two months.
The brilliant young French jockey, Y. Saint-Martin, strode away bitterly disappointed after it was decided Relko would not run. He threw his jockey’s helmet to the ground in anger.
