Seven To Advise On Conductors

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON. June 30 With more than 120 applications in hand, the Broadcasting Corporation has set up a seven-man committee to make recommendations on Ute selection of a principal conductor and an associate conductor for its orchestras.

The appointees will work closely together in over-all charge of the National Orchestra, the concert orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra. They will also have charge of N.ZJB.C. Orchestra trainees. The N.Z.B.C. chairman (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) yesterday announced the names of the advisory committee: the present conductor (Mr J. Hopkins). who will become musical director of the Australian Broadcasting Commission later this year; the DirectorGeneral of Broadcasting (Mr G. Stringer); the controller of N.Z.B.C. sound programmes (Mr M. Rickard); the leader of the National Orchestra (Mr V. Aspey); the organist and choirmaster of the Christchurch Cathedral (Mr C. F. Browne); Mr F. Tumovsky (business man, music administrator and member of the Arts AdvisoryCouncil), and Dr. J. Wolffers (formerly chairman of the

Boston University music division and mow a music critic and adult education lecturer in Auckland). This committee will consider all applicants and make recommendations to the corporation which is the final appointing authority. The committee’s first meeting, in about a fortnight, will begin work which is expected to take “some time,” Dr. Llew’ellyn said. It will have complete freedom of action, and will probably approach individuals and organisations both here and overseas for information.

Mr Stringer has been appointed chairman. Until he returns from his present overseas trip, his deputy, Mr L. R. Sceats. will act for him.
