SURGERY NEEDED
Islander Flown
To Fiji (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 30. A seriously ill man from the Island of Otafu, in the Tokelau group, was rushed to hospital at Apia, Western Samoa, yesterday in a combined effort by the Navy and the Air Force. H.M.N.Z.S. Rotoiti arrived at Otafu on a routine call on Friday. Hospital authorities told the ship’s doctor of a<n islander who was suffering from a suspected hernia. At the hospital’s request the ship's medical team went ashore and confirmed the diagnosis. It was decided that the man needed an immediate operation.
A R.N.Z.A.F. Sunderland flying-boat was due to call at the island later this week, but as the man's condition was regarded as too serious to wait it was arranged for a Sunderland to leave Lauthala Bay, Fiji, early yesterday morning. The man was transferred from the Rotoiti. where he had spent the night, and flown to the Apia Hospital.
