PENSIONERS’ PROBLEM

Lack Of Good Diet (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 30. It was not the lack of the right food that causes deterioration in the health of elderly people—it was the lack of money, said Mr H. Binsted, chairman of the Auckland branch of the Government Superannuitants’ association, in his annual report.

He said there can be little doubt that the financial inability to purchase suitable foods played a part in hastening the onset and development of elderly persons’ disorders.

Mr Binsted said it was well known that there was a strong tendency for elderly people living alone gradually to drift into the practice of depending largely on bread, butter and jam, thus receiving an intake of excess carbohydrates and fats.

“Surely the time is long overdue for some permanent arrangement to be made to adjust pensions to meet inflation.” he said.
