Southern Rhodesia
Sir, —I was disturbed to read in the papers here that the Governments of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand had supported Mr Butler in not giving independence to S outlier n Rhodesia. That country’s recent constitution gives nearly a quarter of the seats to African members and initially it was supported by Mr Nkomo. Later he opposed it and the boycott of the African Nationalists as well as the impending destruction of the federation must have contributed to the defeat of Sir Edgar Whitehead. In the circumstances it seems reasonable for there to be no further changes in the life of the present parliament. One hoped New Zealand would stand by Southern Rhodesia.—Yours, etc.,
W. R. MORRIS London, June 9, 1963.
