Sir, —Through your columns. I would like to ask the Riccarton Borough Council the following: (1) What is being done to lessen the smoke nuisance from industry in Mandeville street? This is a source of annoyance to parts of Picton avenue, and I understand it has been “under review” by the council for a long time. (?) Is anything further being done to move the saleyards? In no other city in New Zealand would saleyards be permitted so close to residential areas. (3) Is anything going to be done about the lorries and trucks parked unlighted in various streets in Riccarton. especially at week-ends. These are a menace in a fog and an eyesore at all times. —Yours, etc., PICTON AVENUE. June 10, 1963. [The Town Clerk of Riccarton (Mr R. Sarjeant) said: “The chief chemical inspector for New Zealand (Mr R. T. Douglas) has carried out an exhaustive investigation into the smoke problem arising from one of the industries in Mandeville street and has inspected others. His full report is being considered by the company concerned. He made an early recommendation that a smoke meter, recorder, and an alarm system be installed, and the particular company has imported the necessary apparatus. The equipment has arrived and will be installed within a very short time. It will enable the management to investigate the times and causes of dense smoke emission so that the nuisance can be minimised. The council is not taking any steps to move the saleyards. I have not received any other reports or complaints concerning unlighted trucks on roadways at night, but the correspondent can be assured that traffic officers will be instructed to pay particular attention to this danger. Should the correspondent know of specific instances I would appreciate information as to locality, etc.”]
