BURNSIDE H.S. ROLL
Board Sets Limit
Third-form enrollments for Burnside High School next year will be limited to 300 pupils. The school's board of governors fixed this limit at its meeting last evening. This would mean a roll between 1020 to 1030 or an increase of about 100 on this year, said the principal, Mr C. Cross. The board also agreed to Mr Cross’s request that the number of third forms- be increased by one to 10.
Mr Cross reported that 363 prospectuses had been asked for. He expected that the demand for places would be more than 300. Acceptances were limited by accommodation, courses and staffing, he said.
Even if the four e»tra classrooms wanted were completed (and he had no official word of this) for next year, the accommodation problem would be intensified. He was faced with the problem of an increased number of classes in the higher forms which were not large enough to fill the classrooms. The extra classrooms would be necessary in any case, said Mr Cross.
The board agreed to Mr Cross’s proposal that consideration be given to the building of a new groundfloor library and administration rooms. It decided to bring the matter to the attention of the Department of Education.
