ATTACKS ON TREES

Burnside H.S. Problem

Action on children who have broken and spoiled 10 of Burnside High School’s trees and the measures to be taken to prevent this vandalism continuing are unsolved questions for the school's board of governors, which was confronted with the problems at its meeting last evening. In his report to the board, the principal, Mr C Cross, said the 10 trees had been cut and damaged by “children from outside the school who congregate in the grounds in the evenings and during week-ends.” He said it would be “unwise to consider further improvements in this part of the school property until further measures can be taken to control outside interference" Mr Cross said he had enlisted police co-operation and had "pounced” on several children but he felt that some action on the part of the board would be helpful.

Various suggestions. Including toe use of electric fences, the pasturing of a wild bull and the formation of a school vigilante squad were put forward for discussion.

All were rejected. Several ■members said that the problem would resolve itself as toe culprits grew out of toe destructive stage into a more responsible frame of mind.

Cyclist Injured.— Mr James Tuhikrama, of 13 Goldsmith street, Waltham, suffered slight injuries when his bicycle and a car collided at the corner of Cashel and Manchester streets at 5.20 p.m. yesterday. He was treated al toe Christchurch Hospital and discharged.
