Police Thought Consent Pap ers Were Forged

AUCKLAND, June 13.

Melbourne police prevented a wedding between two New Zealand minors because they thought the papers of consent they had were forged, Mr D. M Robinson told toe Magistrate’s Court ait Auckland today when he appeared for Joseph William Devereux, aged 19. a rigger .

Devereux pleaded guilty to a breach of probation and Mr F. McCarthy. S.M., sentenced him to Borstal training for up to two years. Mr Robinson said the girl Devereux wanted to marry was a minor. Both obtained permission to marry in Auckland from their parents, but Devereux felt he was

not being given “a fair break” by the girl’s parents. Devereux went to Melbourne and toe girl later joined him there, said Mr Robinson. He was earning £2O a week and supporting himself and the girl in a flat. When they realised they could not marry in Australia. they returned to New Zealand.

The Magistrate said Deveigux had been put on probation for burglary and wilful damage but he did not appear to have taken advantage of it. Devereux had asked permission to go to Australia but this was refused by the probation officer.

“You didn’t worry about that in the slightest. You were deliberately flouting the order of the Court,” said the Magistrate.
