Free Press Principles

Recent events had brought out certain essential principles of a tree press in a democratic society, the chairman of “The Times,” Mr Gavin Astor, said yesterday. “I cannot claim the press is perfect, but very often what is commonly described as ‘irresponsibility’ is tn fact an example of the press doing the duty expected of it in a democratic country.** he told a luncheon.
He said people in any kind of authority were “only too ready” to describe the press as “irresponsible” if it printed stories they disliked.
