FRIGHT FOR CHARLES
Qualifies For Open With 80
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PITTSBURGH, June 12 R. J. Charles, of New Zealand, made sure of a start in this year’s United States Open golf championship with a score of 149 in yesterday's qualifying rounds.
But he nearly ruined his chances with an 80 in the first round. An excellent 69 ©ver the second 18 holes retrieved his position.
The qualifying rounds, played at selected courses all over the country, provided the last of the 129 players who join the exempt list in the open, which starts at Brookline, Massachusetts, on June 20.
Among those who qualified was Sam Snead, who has won every major United States tournament except the open. Among those who failed were the former Australian player, Jim Ferrier, and two former Professional Golf Association champions. Jerry Barber and Jim Turnessa.
