GRANTS FOR P.R.O.

Committee’s Decision The fairest method of contributing to the Canterbury Progress League and Public Relations Office would be on a population basis rather than on capital value, a special committee representing 17 local bodies has decided. The committee was elected last month at a special meeting of local body and progress league representatives. It was suggested that councils should increase their donations by 50 pec cent. In the past, councils have made separate grants to the two offices, but under the new proposals, the grants would be fused together. If the committee's recommendations are accepted by the various councils, the offices will receive an additional £l7OO a year, making a total of £5OOO of which £3200 would be donated by the Christchurch City Council. The balance would be given by the 16 county and borough councils in ■ and around Christchurch. Although the new system would mean increased donations from the majority of councils, in some cases the grants would be substantially decreased. The Wairewa Counity Council, for example, has in the past given £3B a year to the offices, but, with a population of 790, would be required to give only £l4 in future. The committee's - recommendations are being discussed by representatives of councils at the New Zealand Counties' Assoc iation 's' co nf er - ence at Rotorua this week.

There are, in actual fact, men who talk like books. Happily, however, there are also books that talk like men —Theodor Haecker.
