DISCONNECTED WET-BACKS

Danger Of Sealing Emphasised

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, June 12

“If a wet-back is not to be used, it should be removed," said Mr B. Jones, director of the Coal Advisory Service Association, commenting on the recent explosion in Wanganui in which four women were injured. Mr Jones said many people did not realise the danger of sealing these units when they were disconnected from the hot water storage cylinder.

In a wet-back of normal size, about one inch of water would be left in the tank after draining. When a fire was lit this water was converted into steam and could build up a pressure of about 12001 b to the square inch by the time the temperature reached 500 deg Fahrenheit, turning the wet-back into a dangerous pressure tank.
